In a swirl of mist and storm clouds, a ship’s mast rises alone toward the sky. Its half-erased yards and rigging seem to emerge from another time, like a ghost ship caught between sea and land. Below, shores of rust and ochre dissolve into a vaporous white, while a thin geometric yellow line, almost contemporary, unsettles the scene. The Quest converses with the great Romantic tradition: the storm-swallowed ships of J.M.W. Turner, the wreck in Caspar David Friedrich’s The Sea of Ice. Here, though, the shipwreck is not an ending. The mast still stands, reaching for the light, a symbol of a search that continues through the fog.
