The abstract painter sets the gesture free, following in the footsteps of 1950s abstraction: an explosive vision of lines, forms and vivid colours in motion across large-format canvases. Uninhibited abstract paintings, simple at heart yet endlessly complex! A tribute to the great French master of lyrical abstraction, Georges Mathieu (1921–2012).

Lyrical abstraction fascinates me. Born in the mid-twentieth century, this art movement asserts itself as a free and intuitive form of expression, in which the painter’s emotion reveals itself through spontaneous gestures and vibrant compositions. Unlike geometric abstraction, more rigid and ordered, lyrical abstraction favours subjectivity, feeling and a deeply instinctive approach to creation. It invites us into the artist’s inner world, where every mark and every brushstroke carries emotional intensity.

For me, following in the footsteps of the pioneers of the 1950s, such as Hans Hartung, Georges Mathieu and Pierre Soulages, means reconnecting with an approach in which gesture becomes a dance. The canvas is no longer just a surface but a true field of expression, almost a battlefield, where the artist lets his vision burst forth. To free the gesture is to let the unexpected arise, to let the present moment dictate the forms, and to let raw energy imprint itself on the paint.

Large abstract paintings then become spaces of experimentation where vivid colours burst out like flashes of emotion. Lines turn into an anarchic calligraphy, a universal language onto which everyone can project their own interpretations. Forms cross, overlap and collide, creating a perpetual movement that brings the work to life.

Haguier Lyrical abstraction lyrique Lyrical abstraction demands both exceptional technical mastery and a surrender to instinct. This paradox gives the art its fascinating complexity. Every gesture, however spontaneous, is guided by an intimate understanding of colour, composition and balance. The artist paints not only to represent, but to feel, to vibrate, and to make those who contemplate the work vibrate too.

This approach opens a dialogue between the viewer and the painting. The richness of the textures, the power of the colours and the dynamism of the forms invite an active contemplation, where each person’s imagination finds its place. By freeing the gesture, lyrical abstraction transcends its material frame to become an emotional and spiritual experience. In short, this explosive, vibrant art reveals not only the artist’s virtuosity, but also the infinite possibilities of creation, free from all constraints and fully open to interpretation.
